Chapter ten
Sonnie
“That film was awesome!” Sonnie exclaimed as they left the cinema.
“I knew you’d like it,” Riley replied, a satisfied smirk on his lips.
“I have so many ideas for showcase costumes for the tour. The way the microbots flowed into different shapes was super inspiring. I can’t wait to talk to everyone tomorrow. I think we should definitely go into that direction. Obviously, we can’t control the clothes with our minds, but we’ll figure it out.” Sonnie took out his phone and typed a quick message to everyone on his team that there would be an important brainstorming meeting tomorrow and he expected them to be there.
“The tour?” Riley enquired. Sonnie sent the message and tucked the phone back in his pocket, racking his brain to remember if he’d ever mentioned the tour to Riley before.
“Um, yeah. Didn’t I tell you?” Riley shook his head. “The costume shop goes on tour every year, sometimes twice a year, and we visit exhibitions, events and runway shows, where we show some of the theatre’s famous costumes, as well as new pieces. We call them showcase pieces, and we try to make them as artistic and innovative as possible.”
“When are you going on this tour?” Riley's voice sounded strained, the tightness in it slicing at Sonnie's heart.
“In April. I usually go only to one or two events. It lasts about a month so I can’t be away for that long. We try to have somebody from the team at every show. Sawyer organises everything, making sure there’s enough theatre staff to oversee the shows and network with people after.”
“What happens to the costumes once the tour is over?” Riley asked, the cold December air blowing a strand of hair in his eyes. He should have worn a hat, Sonnie thought. It was too damn cold and miserable to be out and about without a hat.
The Christmas lights hanging on every shop window, lamp post, and tree in the entire city shone brightly, reflecting off every surface. Sonnie had noticed how Riley kept his head low and his eyes focused entirely on the pavement every time they’d gone out in the past couple of weeks. Christmas music made him blanch, and then frown, his eyes darkening with misery. The bright signs advertising anything from Christmas sales to fairs and festivals made him avert his gaze, and hearing people’s cheerful voice as they wished ‘Merry Christmas’ made him wince.
It was heartbreaking to watch.
“Sonnie?” Riley prompted. Oh, yes, he’d asked a question. He’d let his mind wander and completely forgot about it.
“Depends. The vintage costumes go back to whatever museum we’d borrowed them from. The new ones we’d made for the tour end up exhibited somewhere or in the theatre’s vault for future use, or auctioned for sale.”
Riley hummed, tucking his hands in his pockets as they kept walking towards the station.
“Why?” he asked after a few minutes.
“Why what?”
“Why do you do all that? Tours and making extravagant costumes you’ll probably never use?”
“The theatre is much more than a stage and an audience.
